25 Sep Collaborating with our Partners to Celebrate World Rivers Day 2024
The International River Foundation (IRF) is committed to working with our global network of partners to drive accelerated action towards healthy and resilient rivers for future generations.
Held on the fourth Sunday of each September, World Rivers Day is a global celebration that shines a spotlight on rivers and the vital role they play in ecosystems, economies, and communities around the world. With many of the world’s rivers in a degraded state and facing increasing pressures associated with pollution, climate change, and biodiversity loss, World Rivers Day is a fantastic opportunity to encourage the improved stewardship of these critical ecosystems all around the world.
Joining more than 100 countries participating in this year’s activities, the IRF partnered with Resilient Rivers SEQ, an initiative of Council of Mayors (SEQ), alongside Lockyer Valley Regional Council, Lockyer Valley Turf Club and Thiess to get our hands dirty and plant 300 native seedlings to help improve riverbank stabilisation and restore habitat along Lockyer Creek, located in Queensland, Australia. Through this initiative, we aim to contribute to reducing upstream erosion and minimise sedimentation impacts on the Brisbane River.
In collaboration with Thiess, we also helped conduct a clean-up day in Indonesia’s Makarti River. Working together, Thiess’ MSJ team, the Makarti Village government and community, PT. Asiana Recycle Indonesia and the local Environment Agency collected 367kg of predominantly plastic waste from the Makarti River. This initiative not only addressed the immediate issue of river pollution but also educated community members on the crucial role rivers play as a source of life, emphasising the need to protect and ensure the resilience of these vital ecosystems.
