59% of rivers in Indonesia are severely polluted, with domestic waste being one of the largest sources of pollution.
In response to this challenge, the IRF and Thiess collaborated to improve access to sanitation by constructing new toilets and installing bio septic tanks across three schools in Lambing Village, benefiting over 2,000 community members living on the Kedang Pahu River. Accelerating action towards achieving SDG 6Â – Clean Water and Sanitation for All – the Clean Rivers Pilot Project was underpinned by an engaging education campaign, teaching students about the relationship between sanitation and river health. Â
Demonstrating our commitment to practical action, this year, we continued to work with Thiess to implement waste management practices in Indonesia’s Makarti Village. This initiative included providing the local community with organic waste recycling, a waste bank program, provision of waste recovery facilities, and educational sessions on waste bank management and waste segregation. Through these efforts, together, we aim to help the community reduce plastic waste disposed in the Makarti River by 700 kilograms each month.
Our long-term vision for this project includes a River Clean Up and Resilience Journey.Â
