In the lead-up to the 2025 International River Symposium (IRS), the International River Foundation (IRF) will facilitate a series of four, two-hour, interactive, online satellite events that will serve as catalysts for innovation, collaboration, and knowledge exchange. Offering a platform for deep exploration and engagement, the satellite events will enable attendees to delve deeper into specific topics, expanding their understanding and expertise beyond what is covered in the main conference. Â
Set to take place on Thursday 28 November 2024 from 2-4 pm (AEST), the theme of the first satellite event is Olympic Rivers: Restoring Urban Waterways and Creating a Legacy for Future Generations. We are excited to announce that Benjamin Raigneau, Head of Sanitation and Water for the City of Paris, will join as a keynote speaker, taking us through the ecological transformation and learnings from the Seine River.Â
Having made international headlines during the recent Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Seine underwent massive rehabilitation efforts to make it swimmable for the first time in nearly a century. The Seine’s revival offers valuable lessons for cities worldwide striving to make their rivers clean, accessible, and central to urban tourism.Â
Through this satellite event, we aim to connect stakeholders from across the globe – city planners, environmentalists, policy-makers, urban developers, tourism officials, businesses and the public – in a dialogue about the role of rivers in building sustainable, swimmable, and tourist-friendly urban environments.Â
The event will focus on the importance of river revitalisation for city livability and the global trend towards reclaiming rivers as natural and recreational assets.Â
