A message from the incoming Chair of the International RiverFoundation, Michael Wright
Dear IRF Friends and Colleagues ,
Having been associated with the IRF for some time, most recently as a Director, I am pleased to confirm that I have accepted the role of Chair of the Board of the International RiverFoundation, taking over from the retiring Prof. Paul Greenfield.
My personal thanks to Paul, who has played an instrumental role over the past 20 years in steering the IRF towards its vision of resilient rivers, supporting thriving communities, ecosystems, and economies. The IRF owes much to Paul’s dedication and commitment.
I would also like to acknowledge my fellow board members who have retired or are retiring from their positions after the board meeting in November. I look forward to continuing to work with Philip Weller and Prof. Bill Dennison, who will remain as Directors, as we transition the IRF Board to address the challenges and leverage the opportunities of 2023 and beyond.
The 25th International Riversymposium, the IRF’s pinnacle event held last month in the City of Vienna, was a huge success. This unique water management and river health forum brought together experts from all over the world, representing science, business, communities, NGOs and governments advancing and celebrating efforts towards the future of river resilience.
Congratulations to Philip Weller, Dr. Eva Abal and everyone who contributed towards the success of this significant global event. With over 350 delegates in-person and more than 150 participating online, the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.
Congratulations also goes to the 2022 European River Prize Winners—The Rivers of Cumbria and the Lake District National Park for their river restoration projects, reducing flood risks, enhancing biodiversity and geomorphology, creating a more sustainable environment. Read more here
In 2023, I will work with the Board and the new IRF Chief Executive Officer Jodie Bignall on building a viable business model to future-proof the IRF.
I look forward to sharing developments with you in the new year. Â Have a joyous festive season.
Michael Wright
